Two similar-looking sealant tubes can behave quite differently after assembly. With Versachem No. 1 and No. 2, the key question is how you need the sealing material to set.
Versachem No. 1 is a fast-drying, hard-setting paste. Versachem No. 2 dries slowly and remains soft and pliable. Choose according to the joint specification and required sealing behaviour.
When should you consider No. 1?
Versachem Gasket Sealant Type 1 is intended for suitable permanent assemblies. The manufacturer lists gaskets, flanges, fittings and threaded connections among its applications. Consider it when the specified repair calls for a hard-setting sealing paste.
When should you consider No. 2?
Versachem Gasket Sealant Type 2 is intended for suitable permanent and semi-permanent assemblies where a pliable seal is required. Listed uses include gaskets, metal assemblies and close-fitting parts.
The differences at a glance
| Selection point | No. 1 | No. 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Drying | Fast drying | Slow drying |
| Set condition | Hard setting | Soft and pliable |
| Selection consideration | Hard-setting seal required | Pliable seal required |
Neither is the universal choice for every gasketed joint. The better product is the one that matches the assembly requirements.
Application starts with preparation
For both products, the published directions call for clean mating surfaces and a thin, even film on both surfaces. Let the coating become tacky before assembling and tightening. Follow the current product instructions together with the equipment’s assembly procedure.
Is No. 2 stronger than No. 1?
The numbers identify different formulations. They are not a strength ranking.
Can either replace an RTV gasket maker?
Check the specified sealing method first. A gasket sealing paste should not automatically replace a formed-in-place RTV gasket.
