Description

Sikaflex®-298 600ml – Teak Deck Bedding Adhesive in UAE

Sikaflex®-298 600ml is a professional marine teak deck bedding adhesive designed for flexible bonding of teak plank decking and deck covering materials on boats, yachts and ships.

Sikaflex®-298 is a slightly thixotropic, 1-component polyurethane adhesive that cures on exposure to atmospheric moisture. It provides elastic behaviour, sound-deadening properties and a long open time, making it particularly suitable for large-area marine deck bonding applications.

The product is used for teak deck bedding and for bonding suitable synthetic-resin deck covering materials to properly prepared sub-deck surfaces.

Sikaflex®-298 also meets regulations established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

White House General Trading LLC supplies Sikaflex®-298 600ml in the UAE for professional marine, yacht, boat-building, shipbuilding, maintenance and refurbishment applications.

Why Choose Sikaflex®-298 for Teak Deck Bedding?

A marine teak deck is exposed to movement, vibration and demanding environmental conditions. The bedding adhesive therefore needs to provide a flexible connection between the decking and the underlying structure.

Sikaflex®-298 combines:

Flexible bonding + long open time + sound deadening + marine application performance

Its typical 600% elongation at break provides elastic behaviour within a correctly designed bonded assembly.

The long working time is also beneficial when applying adhesive over relatively large deck areas.

Sikaflex®-298 for Teak Deck Installation

Sika identifies Sikaflex®-298 as a bedding compound for teak plank decking.

For teak deck installation, the product is applied between the prepared sub-deck and the teak planking to provide a flexible adhesive layer.

For complete Sika teak-deck systems, correct surface preparation, primers and deck-joint caulking products should be selected according to the current Sika Marine application guidelines and pre-treatment chart.

Sika’s guidance for teak deck installation references Sikaflex®-298 for bedding and Sikaflex®-290 DC PRO for deck-joint caulking.

Application

Sikaflex®-298 can be processed between 10°C and 35°C.

The optimum temperature for both substrate and adhesive is between 15°C and 25°C.

For large surface areas, Sika recommends applying the adhesive with a notched spreader with an approximate 4 mm notch depth.

Typical consumption is approximately:

1.2 litres per m²

Care should be taken to avoid trapping air when joining components.

Firm pressure should be applied when bringing the components together, and the bond should be maintained under pressure for at least 3 hours until the adhesive has set.

Application in Hot & Humid UAE Conditions

Sika states that the available open time becomes significantly shorter in hot and humid climates.

This is particularly important for teak deck installation in UAE marine conditions.

Installers should consider:

  • Ambient temperature
  • Substrate temperature
  • Adhesive temperature
  • Relative humidity
  • Size of the bonding area
  • Available working time

before starting installation.

Parts must always be installed within the available open time.

Never join bonding parts after the adhesive has formed a skin.

Sikaflex®-298 has a longer skinning time than Sikaflex®-298 FC and may be used where elevated temperatures and/or higher humidity are expected.

Surface Preparation

For a durable adhesive bond, surfaces must be:

  • Clean
  • Dry
  • Free from grease
  • Free from oil
  • Free from dust
  • Free from contaminants

The required surface treatment depends on the substrate.

Always refer to the current Sika® Pre-treatment Chart for Marine Applications and verify the recommended preparation system using the actual substrates.

Cure Mechanism

Sikaflex®-298 cures by reaction with atmospheric moisture.

At lower temperatures, atmospheric moisture levels are generally lower and the curing reaction may proceed more slowly.

For moisture-impervious substrates or where accelerated curing is required, follow the current Sika application instructions.

Chemical Resistance

Sikaflex®-298 is generally resistant to:

  • Fresh water
  • Seawater
  • Diluted acids
  • Diluted caustic solutions

It is temporarily resistant to:

  • Fuels
  • Mineral oils
  • Vegetable oils
  • Animal fats and oils

It is not resistant to:

  • Organic acids
  • Glycolic alcohol
  • Concentrated mineral acids
  • Concentrated caustic solutions
  • Solvents

For applications involving significant chemical exposure, consult the latest Sika technical documentation.
