Marine Glazing for Polycarbonate & PMMA

Sikaflex®-295 UV is specifically designed for bonding and sealing plastic glazing materials used in marine applications.

It is suitable for:

PC – Polycarbonate
PMMA – Polymethyl Methacrylate / Acrylic

These materials are commonly used for windows and glazing on boats and yachts.

Because some plastic glazing materials can be prone to stress cracking, the actual substrate should be tested and the appropriate Sika® surface pre-treatment procedure followed before installation.

Why Choose Sikaflex®-295 UV for Boat & Yacht Windows?

Marine glazing systems are exposed to movement, vibration, moisture and changing environmental conditions.

Sikaflex®-295 UV combines:

Marine glazing capability + flexibility + weatherability + professional application properties

With a typical elongation at break of 500%, Sikaflex®-295 UV provides flexibility within correctly designed bonded assemblies.

For organic glass such as PMMA and polycarbonate, Sika specifically recommends Sikaflex®-295 UV for boat-window bonding.

Surface Preparation

Correct surface preparation is essential for a durable bond.

Surfaces must be:

  • Clean
  • Dry
  • Free from grease
  • Free from oil
  • Free from dust
  • Free from contaminants

Surface treatment depends on the specific substrate.

Refer to the latest applicable Sika® Pre-treatment Chart for Marine Applications and verify the recommended procedure by testing the actual substrates.

Application

Sikaflex®-295 UV can be processed between 10°C and 35°C.

The optimum temperature for both the substrate and sealant is between 15°C and 25°C.

For a uniform bond-line thickness, the adhesive should be applied in the form of a triangular bead.

Sikaflex®-295 UV can be processed using:

  • Manual piston guns
  • Pneumatic piston guns
  • Electric-driven piston guns
  • Suitable pump equipment

Parts must always be installed within the available open time.

Do not join bonding parts after the adhesive has formed a skin.

Application in Hot & Humid UAE Conditions

The open time of Sikaflex®-295 UV is significantly shorter in hot and humid climates.

This is particularly relevant when carrying out marine glazing work in the UAE.

Installers should therefore consider:

  • Ambient temperature
  • Substrate temperature
  • Product temperature
  • Humidity
  • Available open time

before beginning larger glazing installations.

Cure Mechanism

Sikaflex®-295 UV cures through reaction with atmospheric moisture.

At lower temperatures, the moisture content of the air is generally lower and the curing reaction proceeds more slowly.

Chemical Resistance

Sikaflex®-295 UV is generally resistant to:

  • Fresh water
  • Seawater
  • Diluted acids
  • Diluted caustic solutions

It is temporarily resistant to:

  • Fuels
  • Mineral oils
  • Vegetable oils
  • Animal fats and oils

It is not resistant to:

  • Organic acids
  • Glycolic alcohol
  • Concentrated mineral acids
  • Concentrated caustic solutions
  • Solvents

For applications involving significant chemical exposure, consult the latest Sika technical documentation.
