Description

Tectyl® 506 – Wax-Based Corrosion Preventive Compound

Official Tectyl® Distributor for the UAE, GCC, Middle East & Africa

Tectyl® 506 is a premium, solvent-based corrosion preventive compound with a wax base. It is one of the most versatile products in the Tectyl® range and suits a wide variety of applications, including vehicle rustproofing and protecting machinery, components and spare parts during storage.

Tectyl® 506 protects metal parts in both indoor and outdoor storage, and during local and international shipment. Once cured, it forms a firm, waxy, translucent film with a dark amber colour. The film shields metal surfaces from moisture, humidity and salt-laden air.

Key Benefits

  • Long-term protection: At the recommended dry film thickness, Tectyl® 506 protects against corrosion during storage and during domestic and overseas transport.
  • Indoor and outdoor storage: It provides a minimum of 36 months of indoor protection and 18 months of outdoor protection.
  • Proven test performance: It lasts at least 40 days in neutral salt spray testing (ISO 9227) and at least 100 days in humidity testing (ISO 6270-2).
  • Economical coverage: The recommended dry film is only 50 microns, so a small amount of product protects a large surface area, with about 9.2 m² of theoretical coverage per litre.
  • Easy to apply and remove: You can apply it by brush or low-pressure air spray, and remove it cleanly when protection is no longer needed.
  • Heat tolerant: Once dried and cured, the film withstands operating temperatures up to 100°C.

Typical Applications

  • Vehicle rustproofing and protection of exposed metal parts
  • Machinery, equipment and fabricated steel in storage
  • Spare parts, machined components and tooling held in inventory
  • Export packaging and preservation for sea and land freight
  • Asset preservation in workshops, yards and warehouses
  • Industrial, marine, energy, automotive and manufacturing applications

Surface Preparation

For best results, the metal surface should be clean, dry and free from rust, oil and mill scale. The substrate temperature should be between 10°C and 35°C when you apply the product.

Application

  • Tectyl® 506 is supplied ready to use.
  • Ambient and product temperatures should be between 10°C and 35°C during application.
  • Stir or agitate thoroughly before use so the product has an even consistency. Wax can settle and the viscosity can change during storage.
  • If the product thickens because of cold storage or solvent loss, you can thin it with no more than 1–2% Tectyl® 150. Over-thinning will reduce film build, change the drying time and can affect performance.
  • Apply by brush or low-pressure air spray.

Removal

  • While still wet: Remove with Tectyl® Biocleaner, Tectyl® 150 or low-pressure steam.
  • After drying and curing: Remove with Tectyl® Biocleaner or Tectyl® 150.

Storage & Shelf Life

  • Store between 10°C and 35°C.
  • Do not allow the product to freeze.
  • Agitate gently before use.
  • When stored correctly, the product is best used within 36 months of the production date.

Health, Safety & Handling

  • Make sure there is adequate ventilation during application and curing.
  • Keep the partially cured film away from flames, sparks, excessive heat and other ignition sources.
  • Do not discharge into drains, soil or water, and follow local environmental regulations.
  • Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full handling and first-aid information. You can request it from our team.

Note: The manufacturer does not recommend applying other coatings over or under Tectyl® 506, because this may cause chemical incompatibility and reduce performance. If you need a primer, please consult our technical team first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tectyl® 506 used for?

Tectyl® 506 is a general-purpose, wax-based corrosion preventive. It is used for vehicle rustproofing and for protecting machinery, components and spare parts in storage or in transit. It suits indoor storage, outdoor storage, and both domestic and export shipments.

How long does Tectyl® 506 protect metal surfaces?

At the recommended dry film thickness of 50 µm, it protects for at least 36 months indoors and at least 18 months outdoors. The actual protection period depends on the environment, surface preparation and film thickness.

Is Tectyl® 506 suitable for export packaging and sea freight?

Yes. Tectyl® 506 protects metal parts during both domestic and overseas transport, which makes it a common choice for export preservation.

How is Tectyl® 506 applied?

It is supplied ready to use and can be applied by brush or low-pressure air spray. Agitate it well before use. Apply it when the product, the air and the metal surface are all between 10°C and 35°C.

How much area does one litre cover?

At the recommended dry film thickness of 50 µm, theoretical coverage is about 9.2 m² per litre. Practical coverage will be lower because of application losses and surface profile.

How long does Tectyl® 506 take to dry?

At 20°C, it is dry to the touch in about 2 hours and fully cured in about 24 hours. Low temperatures, high humidity or thicker films will lengthen these times.

What does the film look like once dry?

It cures to a firm, waxy, translucent film with a dark amber colour.

Can Tectyl® 506 be removed after storage or shipment?

Yes. Before it dries, you can remove it with Tectyl® Biocleaner, Tectyl® 150 or low-pressure steam. After it has dried and cured, you can remove it with Tectyl® Biocleaner or Tectyl® 150.

Can I paint or apply another coating over Tectyl® 506?

This is not recommended. Applying other coatings over or under Tectyl® 506 can cause chemical incompatibility and reduce its performance. If you need a primer, contact our technical team before applying it.

What temperature can Tectyl® 506 withstand?

Once dried and cured, the film tolerates operating temperatures up to 100°C.

Can Tectyl® 506 be thinned?

It is designed to be used as supplied. If it has thickened because of cold storage or solvent loss, you can thin it with no more than 1–2% Tectyl® 150. Over-thinning will reduce film build and performance.

How should Tectyl® 506 be stored, and what is its shelf life?

Store it between 10°C and 35°C, do not let it freeze, and agitate it gently before use. When stored correctly, it is best used within 36 months of the production date.

Is Tectyl® 506 flammable?

Yes. It is a solvent-based product with a flash point of 40°C. Apply it with adequate ventilation, and keep the partially cured film away from flames, sparks and other ignition sources. See the Safety Data Sheet for full handling guidance.

What is the difference between Tectyl® 506 and Tectyl® 506-EH?

Tectyl® 506 and Tectyl® 506-EH are separate products with their own technical specifications. Select according to the application and current product data sheet.
